March Dagger and Ringen (Wrestling) Workshop with Guest Instructor Ties Kool

Second Intent Fencing is pleased to announce our first workshop of 2015. March 28th and 29th we will be hosting guest instructor Ties Kool of the Netherlands for a two-day workshop on Dagger and Wrestling.

About the Workshop

In this workshop, we will work on Wrestling (Ringen) and Dagger. In almost any manuscript the author refers to Ringen as the base for all martial arts, and that is where we will start. We will go through the work of Fabian von Auerswald, a German Wrestling master, as well as a self-defense book by the Dutch merchant Nicolaes Petter, who wrote the book on self-defense against unarmed and armed attackers.

From there, we will begin working with the dagger using both German and Italian works. Both workshop days will have a separate program. It’s possible to follow either day separately, but to get a better understanding of the techniques and systems, two days is preferable.

The workshops will run from 1:30 – 6:00pm on Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th. Please arrive at 1:00 for registration and warm up.

No experience required, ages 16+. Dagger trainers will be provided but you may bring your own, provided it passes inspection. Cost for the workshop is $50 for one day or $80 for both days.

About Ties Kool

Matthys (Ties) Kool has been practicing HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) since 2003, originally training under Mishael Lopes Cardozo and Kenneth Smolders at AMEK, the largest Western Martial Arts group in the Netherlands. Since 2006 he has been the club’s main co-instructor for workshops and demonstrations, having started teaching there in 2005. Since 2007 Ties has been responsible for running AMEK classes in Amsterdam, and in 2008 he took charge of the AMEK youth classes.

Ties has conducted workshops at international events since 2011, having previously assisted at such events since 2010. In addition to teaching, Ties regularly organizes major European competitions, including the International Lowlands HEMA Gathering in the Netherlands. This has helped him develop the technical skills required for the successful delivery of workshops.

Ties also fights in several tournaments a year, participating in both longsword and single-handed weapons, such as sabre and sidesword. He is the head coach for the AMEK Fight Team.
